Update: November 1, 2008 The event this past Sunday at Ricadonna Salon and boutique was a smashing success. The coordinators would like to send a huge “thank you” to all who supported the event. In addition to the money raised and the heightened awareness, there was also a wonderful and joyous community spirit in effect. Many folks that weren’t able to donate goods or money donated their time. Children donated money from piggy banks and heartfelt letters were written from people who couldn’t attend. The sensitivity that surrounded the event created togetherness amongst all walks of life. Many of the contributors and volunteers didn’t even know the Gresham family personally. In this day and age it’s easy to sometimes feel like a cog in the machine; like you don’t matter. This event made it evident that each one of us DOES matter, and that one person CAN make a difference. The trickle-down effect was amazing to witness firsthand. This is a list of the major contributors to the event. In addition, there were many kind people who stopped by off the street to donate money simply because they saw the flyer, and generous folks who bid on items in the silent auction, and we were unable to get everyone’s names. If you are a contributor and not listed here, please accept our profound thanks from the bottom of our hearts. Thanks again to everyone. Please don’t forget that people everywhere continue to need support, especially in the coming months. If you have the time to volunteer, or the means to give, please get involved in a charity in your area, maybe help someone you know personally, or sponsor a family in need this holiday season. Gift Basket Update: October 19, 2008 My name is Angela Guerriero. It’s been my pleasure to know the Gresham family for many years. On October 18th of 2008 at 10:10am, Rick Gresham past away, finally succumbing in his battle with cancer. He left behind his loving wife Bonnie of 26 years and his 2 children Ashley and Trevor. Although the family is strong they have suffered a tragic loss and are in a time of great need, now more than ever. I wanted to share with you an experience that will forever change my life. The morning before Rick past away, he found the flyer for the event taking place Oct 26th and for the first time he was made aware of the efforts to help his family. As he read the story he was brought to tears and turned to his wife Bonnie and said, “You’re going to be OK. You’re going to get help”. Shortly after that, Tracey Castro and I went to check in on the Gresham family. We wanted to take them a few things to help them get by, prior to the fundraiser this Sunday (10/26) at Ricadonna Hair Salon in Murrieta. Rick was up, and in great spirits. He was touched that there were so many people who would be willing and able to help his family. Again, he told his wife Bonnie, “It’s going to be OK”. Later that evening, Rick started let go. The next morning, he was gone. I would like to believe that all of the people joining together to help this family might have brought them a little peace. Bonnie has told me that Rick knew there was going to be help for her and that he could let go. He fought hard against a disease that progressed in 4 weeks. There is never enough time to prepare, but in this situation his rapid decline added to the excruciating nature of this disease. In the end the cancer was stronger then he was. He was tired, but he held on until he knew his family would be OK. It was our goal to give Rick Gresham and his family a bit of piece of mind during his convalescence and eventual passing. If we accomplished that goal, if we were able to bring any ease at all in their desperate time, than I will be forever changed. So now more then ever I ask all of you to come together on Sunday October 26th in celebration of Rick’s life and to help raise money for a family who’s in desperate need. Rick is at peace now. He is no longer suffering, but his family is. We can help. Thank you for all of your time and your caring. The funeral is going to be on Tuesday October 28 at Rancho Community Church located 31300 Rancho Community Way, Temecula, CA 92592 at 10:00 am. Angela Guerriero Update: October 18, 2008 Tracey Castro and Angela Guerriero went to check in on the Gresham family yesterday. Although there has been more seizures and there are more rough days then good, Rick was in great spirits and seemed to be comfortable. He was alert and was able to read to read the Fund Raiser flyer for the first time. He was so touched that so many people would come together to help his family in their time of need. Bonnie and the kids are hanging in their and have learned to enjoy everyday not knowing what that night might bring. This is a strong family and one we are proud to know and help. About the Event If children have the ability to ignore all odds and percentages, then maybe we can all learn from them. When you think about it, what other choice is there but to hope? We have two options, medically and emotionally: give up, or fight like hell. ~Lance Armstrong Rick Gresham is a resident of the Temecula valley, and has been sine 1987. Rick Gresham is a father of two, and the husband of Bonnie. They’ve been married for 26 years.Rick started his own business in 1987 and he’s been serving the Temecula valley for the last 21 years. Rick Gresham is dying of cancer. He is living with constant hospice care, and he’s in and out of consciousness. His family is living in despair. Rick’s wife Bonnie is his constant companion making work impossible. Castro Financial Group is sponsoring an event to raise money that will be used to support an amazing woman in her struggle to make the most of this precious time. The American people in 2008 are likely only 1 degree of separation away from someone suffering from cancer. The nature of the disease is to destroy from within. When insurance and treatment options run out, there is only the community in which you live to turn to. The Temecula valley is a community devoted to pushing back against this insipid disease and supporting a local family caught in the grips of cancer. The Gresham children attended local schools and local churches. They supported their community with a great pride when times were good, and it is to this community that they now reach out to in their time of need. A benefit is being held for the Gresham family at Ricadonna hair salon in Murrieta Sunday Oct. 26. The event will run from 11am to 5pm. Over 30 stylists will be cutting, styling and donating their time for 6 hours. A $25 minimum donation is appreciated. There will be a silent auction, raffle and refreshments with all proceeds going to the Gresham family.
